Islamic Period (638 – 1918 A.D.) antiquities come from a period of the Islam conquest of the Holy Land. Much of what is seen in modern Jerusalem is built on Islamic architecture.
Jerusalem was an important city of the Byzantine province of Palestina Prima. Just 23 years prior to the Muslim conquest, in 614 A.D, it fell to an invading Sassanid army under Shahrbaraz during the last of the Byzantine-Sassanid Wars.
Momentous events took place with the Muslim conquest of the region in the seventh century A.D. This marked the beginning of a historical-cultural process which led to the profound changes in Israel and it’s material culture.
These events did not leave an immediate impression on the style of small artifacts, as the craftsmen continued to create in accordance with tradition.
