Description

Jerusalem Temple Tax Coin – Silver Shekel of Tyre

The Bible commanded that the each Israelite man should pay tax to temple as an offering to the Lord (Exodus 30:13). During the time of Jesus, the only shekel that the Temple in Jerusalem accepted was the silver shekel of Tyre. This was because this coin had the purest silver content available. Money changers at the Temple would sell Tyrian shekels in exchange for regular coins so that the people could bring the appropriate offering.

Jesus did not approve of people turning the Jerusalem Temple into a market.

Details: Very Fine Condition.

The silver shekel of Tyre featured the Phoenician god Melkart on the obverse, with a lion skin around his neck and a laurel wreath on his head. It featured  an eagle carrying a palm on the reverse.
