The widow’s mite is a small bronze prutah (small denomination) of the Hasmonean period, first minted under Alexander Jannaeus (103-76 BC). Has a star on the front and an anchor on the back with the name of Alexander Jannaeus in Hebrew. This coin in circulation for a long period of time and was used as the small change during Jesus’ time. This is the coin that Jesus would’ve been referring to in his parable of the Widow’s Offering in Luke 21.
The Widow’s Offering
And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, and He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites. So He said, “Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had.” (Luke 21:1-4)
