Description
Second Temple Currency The Widow’s Mite Coin
The Widow’s Mite coin at the time of Jesus is famously referenced in the New Testament, specifically in the Gospel of Mark (12:41-44).
In these passages, Jesus observes a poor widow donating two small coins, known as mites, to the temple treasury.
Jesus Said: “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others.
They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on” (Mark 12:43-44, NIV).
This act of giving, despite her dire circumstances, has been interpreted as a profound demonstration of faith, sacrifice, and devotion. The Widow’s Mite has since become a symbol of genuine generosity and the idea that the value of a gift is not in its monetary worth but in the spirit and intent behind it.
