Ancient Gold Coin of Emperor Phocas: Victory and Faith
Collectors prize ancient coins for their historical depth. This gold solidus from Emperor Phocas’s era (602-610 A.D.) embodies Byzantine artistry and faith. Minted in Constantinople, it weighs about 4.5 grams with a 20-21 mm diameter. Side A portrays the emperor’s bearded bust, crowned with a cross, holding a globus cruciger.
Side B illustrates a standing angel with a staurogram staff and orb, denoting Christian victory. Found in Jerusalem, it’s in VF condition. Biblically, such imagery echoes angelic roles in Daniel and the Gospels, linking imperial power to divine will.
