Authentic 6th Century A.D. Byzantine period oil lamp with a menorah design.

A special characteristic of most Samaritan oil lamps is their manufacture with a seal filling hole marked by a ridge and broken. Presumably this was done by the purchaser.

But now, O LORD, You are our Father, We are the clay, and You our potter; And all of us are the work of Your hand. (Isaiah 64:8)

The reason for this practice may be connected to the laws of ritual cleanliness. This was observed with great care by the Samaritans.
