Islamic Abbasid decorated clay oil lamp – Found in Jerusalem.

The early Islamic lamps are a continuation of Byzantine lamps. Decorations were initially a stylized form of bird, grain, tree, plant or flower. Then they became entirely geometric or linear with raised dots.

In the transition period some lamps had Arabic writing. However, this writing disappeared until the Mamluk period.

Momentous events took place with the Muslim conquest of the region in the seventh century A.D. This marked the beginning of a historical-cultural process which led to the profound changes in Israel and i’s material culture. These events did not leave an immediate impression on the style of small artifacts, as the craftsmen continued to create in accordance with tradition.

For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching is light; And reproofs for discipline are the way of life (Proverbs 6:23)
