Description

Second Temple Period Oil lamp discovered in Jerusalem.

A Jesus Time oil lamp like these are very unique because this style was made only in Jerusalem. This was only in use for about a hundred years. This is the type of oil lamp that was used in the central hill country of Judea during King Herod’s Rule.

The round body of these lamps was made on a wheel. The distinctive nozzle was made as a separate piece, which was then attached, giving the lamp a unique look known as a “knife-parted” oil lamp.

At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise. 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. 4 The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.

This type of lamp was made exclusively in Jerusalem. The lamps have been discovered in excavations throughout the region. Found when Jews came to Jerusalem for pilgrimages during holidays. They would take these oil lamps as a souvenir from the holy city.
