Clay Juglet for storing balsam

During the time of Jesus, clay juglets came in a variety of sizes and shapes. They were perfect for storing and pouring all manner of liquids, including oil, vinegar, perfume, or medicine. This particular juglet is very similar in size and shape to one that was found in archaeological excavations at Qumran. The juglet from Qumran still had traces of balsam inside. It is quite possible, then, that this juglet, too, once held balsam.

Balsam was a rare and precious substance, treasured for its beautiful fragrance and its medicinal properties. Luke 7 tells of a woman who anointed Jesus’ feet with ointment. Perhaps her ointment was balsam or a similar substance.

“And standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment.”  (Luke 7:38)

This is a Herodian-style clay juglet. It features a rounded, bulbous body, a narrow neck, and a funnel-shaped rim. A handle connects the rim to the body. The body of the juglet features light ribbing, strengthening its thin walls, which are made of reddish clay.
