Description

Clay Jug from the Second Temple Period

Water was a precious commodity throughout ancient history. There were two main sources of drinking water: springs and rainwater. Yet rainwater only fell in the winter month. Those who did not live near to a spring were forced to collect rainwater. They dug deep cisterns and created complicated water-channeling systems. With these, they collected rainwater and stored it for use in the summer months. Carrying water was a daily activity. It involved walking either to the nearest spring or cistern, lowering a jug, such as this Herodian water jug, drawing up water, and carrying the full jug back again. Thus water jugs were an important part of daily life in biblical times.

“Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, ‘Give Me a drink.'” – John 4:6–7
