Description

Hasmonean oil lamp – Maccabean style ancient oil lamp discovered in Jerusalem.

This is a pinched style oil lamp that was produced after oil lamps had already developed a closed nozzle. These style lamps were used first in the Hellenistic period.

This style looks very similar to Iron Age (from the period of the Israelite monarchy) oil lamps. The Hasmoneans chose to bring back this style as a way of restoring the Davidic monarchy.

But now, O LORD, You are our Father, We are the clay, and You our potter; And all of us are the work of Your hand. (Isaiah 64:8)
