Description
Decorated Clay Cup from the Roman Period
Jesus grew up in a conflicted region. Nazareth of the first century CE was within eyeshot of Sepphoris, a large city that embraced Roman culture. Perhaps Jesus, along with Joseph the carpenter, helped to build structures in Sepphoris. The Romans embraced the culture, art and beauty of the Greek culture. This Roman-style decorated cup is an example of the extravagance of this culture. Surely the eye catching scenes on the streets of Sepphoris tempted the senses of the Jewish people in the region. Yet, Jesus’ friends and relatives clung to their worship of the one true God. They showed their distaste for their Roman overlords by eschewing Roman culture and embracing lives of stark simplicity.
“For our boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience that we conducted ourselves in the world in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom but by the grace of God, and more abundantly toward you.” 2 Corinthians 1:12
This Roman-style decorated cup serves as an example of the Roman cultural influence that surrounded Jesus as He grew up in Nazareth. It reminds us not to be distracted by the pleasures of the world, but to focus on Jesus.
