Description
Roman Glass Bottle for Perfume
Roman glass bottles, such as this glass perfume bottle, came in a variety of shapes and sizes. The invention of glassblowing in the first century AD allowed for much more variety in glass vessels than had previously been possible. This simple bottle may be one of the earlier forms of blown glass. The shape and the small size of this bottle indicates that it likely held a precious liquid, such as perfume.
“Ointment and perfume delight the heart, and the sweetness of a man’s friend gives delight by hearty counsel.” – Proverbs 27:9
This glass perfume bottle is of clear glass with patina. The body is elongated. It narrows slightly at the top before flaring into a thickened rim. The shape of the neck and rim would have allowed for a cloth cover to be securely tied over the top of the bottle.
