Glass Amphoriskos from the Time of Jesus

Roman glass vessels offered a delicate, beautiful contrast to the typical clay vessels of the time. With the invention of glassblowing in the early Roman period, glass became widespread. Amphoriskoi such as this one are two-handled vessels that were likely suspended by a string tied through the handles, offering easy access to the contents without cluttering up kitchen workspace. This glass amphoriskos may have contained medicated oil.

This glass amphoriskos consists of green glass and features a globular body. The neck is wide, and the rim has an outfolded rim, perhaps to help with controlled pouring. The handles, made of spun glass, stretch from the rim to the sides of the vessel. The bottom is slightly flattened.
