Description

Ancient Glass Feeder Bottle – Late Roman Period

With the invention of glassblowing in the first century AD, glass vessels became much easier to produce. This led to a greater variety of vessels to accommodate various purposes. This glass bottle has a unique feature. It has a spout added to its side to allow for controlled pouring of the liquid contained in the jug. Residue analysis tests have shown that bottles such as this one contained milk, and scholars have suggested that these small bottles with spouts were feeder bottles for children to drink milk from.

“As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.”
– 1 Peter 2:2–3

This bottle is made of delicate glass, which is pale blue in color. It has a beautiful iridescent patina. The body is rounded, and the base is pushed up slightly for stability. The neck is tall and narrows slightly at the top and bottom. The rim flares, making it easier to pour liquids into the jug. The spout comes from the shoulder of the bottle. It is short and has a wide opening.
