Dagger Blade from the Time of Jesus
In the first century AD tensions were high in Judea. Rebellious whispers grew louder as Jewish Zealots began to plan a revolt against the rule of Rome. Even one of Jesus’ own disciples was a Zealot rebel. The rebellion came to a head in AD 66, but the Zealots had underestimated the Romans. By AD 70, Jerusalem lay in ruins and thousands of Jewish people were dead.
This bronze dagger blade, dating to the Roman period, is a reminder of this bloody time in history. The people had looked for a messiah to lead them to battle against Rome. Jesus came as the Messiah, but he brought a message of deliverance from sin rather than from Rome.
“These things I have spoken to you that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33
