Jerusalem Limestone Mug – Ritual Purity Stone Vessel

During the first century AD, the Jewish people became very concerned with keeping the Old Testament law. Stone vessels were an invention of this period.  This was due to scriptures that noted that some vessel types could become contaminated and impure. Since stone doesn’t appear on the list, the Jewish people made vessels of soft, chalky limestone in order to remain ritually pure.  During his lifetime, Jesus certainly used mugs such as this one, and this ritual purity stone vessel may even be the type of cup used at the Last Supper.

“Then He took the cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. And He said to them, ‘This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many.'” – Mark 14:23–24

This stone mug is made of chalky limestone native to the Jerusalem area. It is cylindrical with a flat base. It is hand chiseled and features a square handle. The mug is unfinished, the stone mason having abandoned it before completing it.
