The Hasmonean dynasty was a ruling dynasty of Judea and surrounding regions during classical antiquity. The Hasmonean Period ran from c. 140 and c. 116 B.C the dynasty ruled Judea semi-autonomously from the Seleucids.
All of the Hasmoneans issued small bronze prutahs with double-cornucopiae on one side and a Hebrew inscription on the other, as follows: “(The name of the Jewish leader) High Priest (Cohen Gadol) and the Community (Chever) of the Jews (Yehudim).”
The Maccabean Revolt was a Jewish rebellion, lasting from 167 to 160 B.C., led by the Maccabees against the Seleucid Empire and the Hellenistic influence on Jewish life.
