Description

Jerusalem Temple Tax Coin – Silver Shekel of Tyre

The Old Testament law commanded that the each Israelite man should give a half-shekel to temple as an offering to the Lord (Exodus 30:13). During the time of Jesus, the only shekel that the temple accepted was the silver shekel of Tyre. This was because this coin had the purest silver content available. Money changers at the temple would sell Tyrian shekels in exchange for regular coins so that the people could bring the appropriate offering.

Jesus did not approve of people turning the temple into a market.

“Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. And He said to them, ‘It is written, “My house shall be called a house of prayer,” but you have made it a “den of thieves.”‘” – Matthew 21:12–13
