Description

Late Bronze Age Canaanite Idol

The Canaanites worshipped a variety of gods, each one with a specific role. There were gods for war, hunting, rain, fertility, fate, the sun, moon, and stars, and more. The Canaanites often made idols representing their gods. They also made other types of statues including figurines, like this Canaanite idol, that represented themselves, worshipping their gods.

This bronze Canaanite idol likely represents a worshipper, with his hands lifted in worship of a god. The figurine clearly represents a man with arms, legs, a torso, and a head. He wears a rounded cap on his head, and his facial features are clearly defined. His hands, which he holds lifted together in front of his chest, show clearly defined fingers. He appears to be wearing an asymmetrical tunic, and he stands on a small platform with a peg underneath.

Height: 4.5″ / 10 cm.
Width: 1.5″ / 3 cm.

Archaeologists have found small clay houses, the correct size for figurines such as this one. The peg at the bottom of the figurine fit into a slot on the floor of the house, and this allows the figurine to fit securely. These small houses were portable, and the Canaanites could carry them wherever they went, presumably to gain favor from the gods. The prophet Micah refers to this practice.

“You have lifted up the shrine of your king, the pedestal of your idols, the star of your god – which you made for yourselves.” – Amos 5:26
