In the centuries following Jesus’ life on earth, Christianity spread across the Roman Empire. During the Byzantine period, churches sprang up in the Holy Land to commemorate biblical sites. Pilgrims traveled to the Holy Land to visit the places where Jesus walked. The Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem was a popular destination for pilgrims, as it commemorated both Jesus’ death on the cross and his burial and resurrection in the tomb. Pilgrims to Jerusalem often took a souvenir, such as this Byzantine cross pendant, home with them to commemorate their travels.

This Byzantine cross pendant is made of bronze. It is a stylistic cross decorated with a pattern of concentric circles. It has a loop at the top to hang it from a chain.
