Description

Aphrodite – The Goddess of Love

In the Greco-Roman culture, there was a god or goddess for everything. No matter what a person wanted, he or she could appeal to the appropriate deity. Unlike the one just, loving, omnipotent God of the Judeo-Christian tradition, these deities were very human-like in character. They were thought to be small, petty, and easy to manipulate. Yet, the Greeks and Romans dutifully worshipped them. Aphrodite was the Greek goddess of love, beauty, pleasure, and fertility. She corresponded to the Roman goddess Venus.

When Paul visited Athens, he noticed the prevalence of idolatry in that city. The Greeks were concerned with worshipping every god in existence. They even built an altar “to the unknown god,” just in cast they had missed one. Paul used the opportunity to tell them about the one true God.

“Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, ‘Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious; for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you.'” – Acts 17:22–23
