Description

Roman Period Bronze Incense Shovel

In AD 70, Jerusalem fell to the tenth Roman legion, who had besieged the city. The Romans executed thousands of the Jewish citizens of the city, and they re-branded Jerusalem as a Roman city, Aelia Capitolina. Temples to pagan gods sprang up on both Christian and Jewish holy places, representing the triumph of Rome over the local religions. However, despite short-lived victory, the Roman Empire eventually collapsed. Meanwhile, Christianity, which Rome had tried valiantly to destroy, continued to thrive and spread. This bronze incense shovel dates to the Roman period and was part of worship in a pagan temple.

“But then, indeed, when you did not know God, you served those which by nature are not gods. But now after you have known God, or rather are known by God.” – Galatians4:8–9
