Description

Stone Owl of the Greek Goddess Athena

The ancient Greeks worshiped a plethora of gods and goddesses. One significant goddess was Athena, the goddess of wisdom and warfare. The owl was a symbol of Athena, often pictured with her or representing her. The city of Athens was named after Athena, and the acropolis of the city featured more than one temple in her honor.

When the apostle Paul came to Athens, he encountered the worship of pagan gods. He reasoned with the Athenians, and explained to them about the one true God.

“Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, ‘Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious; for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I eve found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you.'” – Acts 17:22–23

This Greek stone owl features stylistically carved details including feathers, wings, feet, eyes, a beak, and ear tufts. The eyes are carved in a double ring and rimmed with white paint.
