Description

Bronze Sword from the Roman Period

During the time of Jesus, the Roman Empire controlled Judea.  Jewish zealots collected weapons and trained for the day that they would revolt against Rome. This Roman period bronze sword is an example of the type of weapon used at that time. The Jewish people looked forward to the day that their Messiah would free them from the tyranny of the Romans. Yet, Jesus came, not to lead them in battle against Rome, but to free them from bondage to sin. This was a difficult lesson for Jesus’ disciples to learn, and even at Jesus’ arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane, his disciples were prepared to fight.

“And suddenly, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. But Jesus said to him, ‘Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword.'” – Matthew 26:51–52
