Anointment Clay Juglet used in the Second Temple period.

This small Herodian style juglet, discovered in the Jerusalem area, dates to the time of Jesus. The small size and enclosed shape of the juglet made it practical for storing semi-precious liquids, such as perfumed oils for anointing. The contents could be safely stored in the juglet by sealing it with a wax stopper, and the narrow neck allowed the contents to be poured out in a controlled manner.

This juglet is reminiscent of the story of the woman who anointed Jesus’ feet with oil:

“[she] stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil.” – Luke 7:38

This juglet dates to the first century CE. It is buff-colored and lightly ribbed. The body is rounded and narrows to a thin neck with a widened rim. A delicate handle connects the rim to the body.
