Description

Molded Oil Lamp with Six Nozzles

If one wick produces a little light, each additional wick will produce that much more light. Thus, in the Late Roman period, potters began producing lamps with multiple nozzles, such as this six-nozzle oil lamp, to accommodate multiple wicks. The reservoir of oil in the body of the lamp now fueled multiple flames instead of just one.

During this period, Christianity was spreading like wildfire across the known world. Persecution of Christians prompted them to move from their homes to new lands, bringing the word of the gospel with them. This six-nozzle oil lamp is a picture of how the light of the gospel multiplied and spread.

“Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.'” – John 8:12

“Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem.” – Acts 6:7

Details:

This six-nozzle oil lamp features a rounded body with a wide spout. The tip of the spout contains six nozzle holes, all of which are charred. This is evidence that the lamp was used in antiquity. The spout of the lamp features a decoration of alternating rows of leaves and circles. The lamp once featured a small loop handle at the back, but it has broken off, and only a nub remains.
