Description

Oil Lamp from the Time of King David

Ancient oil lamps such as this one were simple in style. A potter would form a shallow clay bowl on his potter’s wheel and then pinch one side to create a nozzle for the wick. To use it, you would fill the bowl with oil, lay a wick in the nozzle, and light the wick. The flame created a small circle of light. This Davidic oil lamp is a classic example of a bowl-shaped lamp.

David and other heroes of the Old Testament would have used oil lamps just like this one, and it was this type of lamp that David was thinking of when he wrote such things as:

“For You are my lamp, O Lord, the Lord shall enlighten my darkness.” – 2 Samuel 22:29

“For you will light my lamp; the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.” – Psalm 18:28

This Davidic oil lamp is comprised of brown clay, It features a rounded bowl and a flattened rim. The nozzle has a pinched shape, and it shows charring on one side where the wick lay. This provides evidence of the lamp being used in antiquity.
