Description

Decorated Plate from the time of Joshua

During the Late Bronze Age (ca. 1550–1200 BC), fine, decorated pottery was highly prized by the Canaanite inhabitants of the Holy Land. Vessels imported from Cyprus graced the tables of those who could afford them. Local potters imitated the Cypriot styles, making cheaper versions of them. This decorated plate with wishbone style handles is very typical to this time and style.

It was during this period of time that Joshua and the Israelites arrived in the Promised Land after the Exodus from Egypt. After 40 years of wandering in the wilderness, the Israelites did not have the capacity or skill to create fine pottery. Their pottery was rough and poorly made. But, as they moved into the Promised Land, conquering cities from the Canaanites and plundering their goods, they certainly would have been pleased to obtain fine wares such as this decorated plate. In fact, God had promised them this very thing.

“So it shall be, when the Lord your God brings you into the land of which He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give you large and beautiful cities which you did not build, houses full of all good things, which you did not fill, hewn-out wells which you did not dig, vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant – when you have eaten and are full – then beware, lest you forget the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.” – Deuteronomy 6:10–12.
