Description

Juglet for Extra Oil to Refill Oil Lamp

Juglets such as this one were common during the time of Jesus. Although they may have been useful for a variety of purposes, their main use was as oil filler juglets. Clay oil lamps were small. They held enough oil to create a little bit of light, but they would run out quickly. For use at home, this was no problem. But, if someone wanted a portable light, they would need to take extra oil so that they could re-fill the lamp when it ran low on oil.

As the Good Samaritan travelled between Jericho and Jerusalem, he would have been wise to take a lamp and some oil in case he didn’t reach his destination before nightfall. Perhaps he used the oil from his filler juglet to anoint the wounds of the robbed man.

“A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead…But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.” – Luke 10:30, 33–34.
