Description

Bronze Idol from the Canaanite Period – Bronze Bull Figurine

The inhabitants of the ancient near east worshipped a vast variety of deities. Among these were both human- and animal-shaped gods. The bull was a common form and represented fertility. Depictions of Ba’al, the Canaanite storm god, often show him in the form of a bull.  Idols came in a variety of sizes and materials including wood, clay, and metal. This small bronze bull figurine may have been a household idol, and is an excellent example of the type of god the Canaanites worshiped.

Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but they do not speak; eyes they have, but they do not see; they have ears, but they do not hear; noses they have, but they do not smell; they have hands, but they do not handle; feet they have, but they do not walk.” – Psalm 115:4–7

This bronze bull figurine dates to the Late Bronze Age (ca. 1550–1200 BC). It is slender with clearly defined, although slightly stylistic, features. It has four legs, a long tail, ears, horns, eyes, and a mouth.

Height:2.8″ Inches – 7 CM.
