Description

Jewish Revolt Bronze Prutah – Late First Century AD

In AD 66, Jewish Zealots revolted against Rome. While Vespasian, a Roman general, marched to Judea to quell the rebellion, the Jewish rebels established a foothold in the land. They minted their own coins, which featured  a ceremonial cup on the obverse and a vine leaf on the reverse. The words, “For the Freedom of Zion” appeared on the coin. The revolt ended with victory for the Romans and defeat for the Zealots. In AD 70, the temple in Jerusalem was destroyed and the Roman army settled in Jerusalem, re-naming it Aelia Capitolina.

“And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James.” – Acts :13
