Description

Coin of Antiochus VII  – Maccabean Coin

Following the Maccabean revolt, there was a time of relative peace in Jerusalem. The Jewish people celebrated the success of the revolt with Hanukkah, a holiday that continues to this day. Under the rule of Antiochus VII of Syria, the Jewish people had the freedom to mint their own money for the first time. John Hycarnus I, one of the Maccabean’s, minted this coin in Jerusalem around 132–130 BC. This small copper coin was the first type of Jewish coin ever minted.

The obverse of this coin of Antiochus VII shows a lily, which was a decorative motif in the Jewish temple. On the reverse of the coin is an anchor. The name of Antiochus appears alongside the anchor.

“Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will.” – Matthew 10:29
