Description

Eastern Terra Sigillata Roman-Style Bowl

As the Roman Empire expanded and stretched across the known world, markers of Roman culture, such as this Roman-style bowl, permeated local cultures, including that of Judea. At first, the Jewish people accepted these Roman status symbols, but eventually the tides turned. The Jews began to see the Romans as cruel oppressors. They turned their focus toward preserving their own Jewish culture and eschewed the use of Roman-style wares.

This Eastern Terra Sigillata ware Roman-style bowl represents that brief window in history when the Jewish people embraced Roman culture. By the time of Jesus and his apostles, Jewish nationalism was on the rise, and symbols of Roman culture were no longer in use among the Jewish people. Paul the apostle complained that he had been wrongfully arrested:

“And it came to pass after three days that Paul called the leaders of the Jews together. So when they had come together, he said to them: ‘Men and brethren, though I have done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers, yet I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.'” – Acts 28:17.
