Hanukkah Oil Lamp

During the second century BC, the Jewish people, under the leadership of Judas Maccabeus, revolted against the Greek Seleucids who controlled Jerusalem. Their victory set the stage for the political situation into which Jesus was born. Each year at Hanukah, the Jewish people celebrate the Maccabean victory. They light candles each day to commemorate the Hanukkah miracle. In an act of dedication to God, the priests lit the temple menorah even though they only had enough oil to create light for one day. Miraculously, the menorah lamps burned bright for eight days. Jesus celebrated Hanukkah, which is also known as the Feast of Dedication.

“Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter. And Jesus walked in the temple, in Solomon’s porch.” – John 10:22–23.

Today, it is traditional to light candles for Hanukkah. But the original light sources of the second century BC were small, pinched oil lamps such as this one. The body of the lamp held oil, and a wick, laid through the pinched hole, supported the flame, which shed a small circle of light.

Details:

This Hanukkah oil lamp is made of tan-colored clay. It originally had the shape of a small bowl. The potter folded two sides of the bowl upward. He pinched them together at the top to create the body of the lamp, complete with a filling hole and a nozzle.
