Byzantine Oil Lamp – Radiated Candlestick Type

Oil lamps were popular throughout antiquity. They served a practical purpose: shedding light into the darkness. Yet some oil lamps, such as the radiated candlestick type lamp, also held symbolic value. They represented the light of Christ. Christian pilgrims sought after radiated candlestick lamps such as this one, as souvenirs from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. There was great significance in these small lamps that had been lit with the holy fire at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. A Christian pilgrim, visiting Jerusalem, might take one home as a lasting blessing to remind them of the light of Christ.

This clay oil lamp is mold-made. It features a design of radiating lines culminating in a candlestick motif on the nozzle. The nozzle is charred, which shows that this lamp was used in antiquity.
