Description

Glass Flask from the Roman Period.

Glass vessels served a variety of purposes during the Roman period. Some were ideal for storing commodities, others for serving foods and beverages. A Roman glass flask, such as this one, served a unique purpose. They were intended for mixing beverages, particularly wine. During this period, it was customary to mix water with wine rather than serving it full strength. It was also common to flavor the wine by adding spices or aromatic essences.

“And they brought Him (Jesus) to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it.” – Mark 15:22–23

This Roman glass flask features a bulbous body, a wide neck, and flaring rim. It is made of yellowish-green glass. The base is wide, allowing for stability.
