Roman Glass Medicine Bottle

Glassmaking became a large industry during the Early Roman period. Before that time, glassmakers created vessels by pressing melted glass into molds. This method was time consuming and expensive. Glassmakers also faced limitations in the types of vessels they could produce – mainly only bowls. With the invention of glassblowing in the Early Roman period, many new types of glass vessels came onto the market at lower prices, since the new method of glassmaking was much less complicated. Then a new technique came into use, which combined the previous two methods. Glassmakers blew glass into molds to create a wider variety of vessel shapes and styles.

This square Roman glass bottle is an example of a mold-blown glass jar from the Roman period. Bottles were versatile for containing a variety of liquids. Often bottles such as this one contained medicated oil, which would have been prescribed by a doctor.

This bottle is made of greenish glass. It is squared and tapers slightly toward the base. The neck flares and is slightly bulbous. The patina on the surface of the glass represents oxidation over time.
