Glass Jar for Ointment – Ribbed Decoration

Glass jars came in a variety of styles during the Roman period, but they all had a similar shape, with a rounded body and wide neck. This glass ointment jar features a pinched rib decoration, created while the glass was heated and flexible. After the glass blower formed the vessel, he or she pressed a tool or a reed into the surface of the glass to create ridges and valleys.

These jars typically contained ointment or balm, substances that were not pourable. These could be medicated ointments, used by a doctor, or perfumed ointments for beautification.

This jar is of colorless glass. It features a patina, the oxidation that builds up over the centuries on the surface of ancient glass. The body of the jar has a rounded shape with a ribbed decoration. The neck narrows, but is relatively wide. The neck flares slightly.
