Description

Ancient Roman Amber Glass Flask

During the Roman period, most dishes, jars, and pots were made of clay. However, glass vessels, such as this amber glass flask, quickly gained in popularity with the invention of glass blowing in the Early Roman period. Yet, these fine, delicate vessels were reserved for special occasions and purposes, while clay vessels continued to function in common, everyday settings. Today, glass antiquities are much rarer than clay ones, both because there were less of them originally, and because, being more delicate, more of them have broken over the passing centuries.

This beautiful amber glass flask is of a type that was used for mixing beverages, such as wine. During this period, it was customary to mix water with wine rather than serving it full strength. It was also common to flavor the wine by adding spices or aromatic essences.

“They gave Him (Jesus) sour wine mingled with gall to drink. But when He had tasted it, He would not drink. Then they crucified Him.” – Matthew 27:34–35
