Description

Tall Glass Flask from the Roman Period

The invention of glass occurred long before the advent of glass vessels. Originally, glass was used to create small items, such as beads. It was only later that glassmakers found that they could press soft glass into molds to create larger, more useful pieces. And it wasn’t until the first century AD that glassblowing was invented. With this invention, glass vessels became much easier to make, and their popularity mounted. This tall glass flask from the Roman period is an example of a blown glass vessel.

Flasks served a unique purpose in the ancient world. Their shape made them perfect for mixing and pouring wine. In those days, it was common to mix wine with water before drinking it. This helped kill harmful bacteria in the drinking water, which often came from questionable sources. Paul instructed Timothy,

“No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomach’s sake and your frequent infirmities.” – 1 Timothy 5:23
