Description

Ancient Glass Jar with Decorations

This delicate glass jar dates to the Byzantine period (4th-6th centuries AD). It features a wide mouth and a rounded body. Spun glass decorations between the neck and the shoulder of the jar form a zigzag pattern. The glass is greenish-blue in color and displays an iridescent layer of patina. Patina is an oxidized layer that forms on ancient glass over the centuries.

During the Byzantine period, Christian pilgrims came from far and wide to visit the Holy Land. Christianity had spread throughout the Roman Empire, despite ongoing persecution. Finally, under Emperor Constantine, Christianity became accepted, and the persecution of Christians stopped. Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, visited the Holy Land. She ordered the construction of churches to commemorate each holy site. These churches included the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, and the Church of the Ascension on the Mount of Olives.

It was during this period that this small glass jar was made and used. This beautifully-decorated jar serves as a reminder of how the gospel message spread in fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecies:

“I will also give you as a light to the Gentiles, that You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.” (Isaiah 49:6)

“And all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.” (Isaiah 52:10)
