Description

Glass Jug from the Time of Jesus

This beautiful glass jug dates to the early Roman period, the time of Jesus. Glassmakers invented the technique of glassblowing in Israel during this time period. This made the production of glass vessels much easier and cheaper than it had previously been. For this reason, many households from this time featured various types of glass vessels.

This jug is made of lovely greenish-blue glass. It features a coating of a unique layer of iridescent patina, the oxidized coating that forms on ancient glass over the millennia. The jug has a round body with a carinated shoulder. The base is pushed up slightly for stability. The neck is tall and narrow with a flared and rolled rim. The handle, which was formed from a separate piece of melted glass, attaches to the neck with folded loops. This jug is extra special because it comes with its original glass stopper, which allowed the original owner of the jar to safely store the jars contents without fear of contamination.

Jar Height: 3.8″ / 9 cm.

Jar Width: 2.5″ / 6 cm.

Stopper Length: 1.5″ / 3 cm.

Perhaps this jar was used for storing perfumed or medicated oil during the time of Jesus.

“Ointment and perfume delight the heart.” Proverbs 27:9

“A merry heart does good, like medicine.” Proverbs 17:22
