Description

Ancient Glass Jug with Head of Roman Deity

This Roman glass jug displays the head of Janus with his two faces, the Roman god of gates and transitions. Janus is typically featured with two faces, one pointing towards the past and one toward the future. The month of January, which provides the transition into the new year, is named after Janus.

While the Romans had a pantheon of gods, one for every aspect of life, Jesus pointed to the sufficiency of one God, saying,

“It is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.'” (Matthew 4:10).

This glass jug is a reminder of the world context in which Jesus lived and taught. While the Romans believed that Janus was the god of gates, Jesus proclaimed himself to be the door (John 10:7). And whole the Romans worshiped Janus as the god of transitions, Jesus was declared to be the same yesterday, today and tomorrow (Hebrews 13:8).

This beautiful ancient glass jug was made with a technique known as mold-blowing. This is a combination of two glass-making methods: mold-formed glass and blown glass. With glass blowing, the molten glass was blown within the confines of a pre-made mold so that it would take the shape of the mold. This allowed glassmakers to create intricate designs in the glass.

This mold-blown jug has a flared rim, a looped handle, and a tapered body. It has a brownish patina. It features the two faces of the Roman god Janus.
