Description

Iron Age I traveler water flask.

Water is a life-sustaining commodity, and during biblical times, people had to draw and carry water daily to supply their needs. Travelers had to carry water with them, re-filling their flasks when they came to water sources.

This flask served as a convenient way for a traveler to store, carry, and drink water. The handles enabled the traveler to tie a string to the flask and hang it over his shoulder. Additionally, the flattened shape made it comfortable to carry the flask against the side of the body. The cup at the top of the flask was a clever addition that served as a cup for the thirsty traveler to drink from.

The flask is made of yellowish clay. It is in very good condition. Archaeological excavations at Megiddo revealed a similar flask, which appears in Megiddo II.

Length: 9″ inches / 23 cm.

Width: 6″ inches / 15 cm.

This flask dates to the Iron Age I. This is the period of the Judges in Israel, and it was during this time that Saul became the first king of Israel. Saul became jealous of David, knowing that David was destined to become king in his place, and he sought to kill him. Although David had the opportunity to kill Saul, he told his companion,

“The Lord forbid that I should stretch forth mine hand against the Lord’s anointed …take now the spear that is at his side and the cruse of water, and let us go.” – 1 Samuel 26:11
