Description

Early Roman Period Cooking Pot

In the ancient world, clay vessels were very popular. They came in a variety of shapes and sizes for purposes such as food storage, storing and pouring liquids, and serving food. Clay vessels were also useful for cooking soups and stews. During the time of Jesus, a clay cooking pot, such as this one, could be found in every kitchen. Such cooking pots are often found in archaeological contexts with charring on the bottoms, evidence that they sat in or above a fire during the cooking process. Meals were simple in those days, and often consisted of a lentil stew with flat bread.

“Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was who had been dead, whom He had raised from the dead. There they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him.” – John 12:1–2

This clay cooking pot has a rounded body with slightly ribbed sides. The mouth is wide, with an upright neck. Two small handles connect the rim with the shoulder of the pot. It is made of reddish clay.
