Description

Late Bronze Age Imported Jug from Cyprus

During the Late Bronze Age, trade flourished in the ancient near east. Trade routes stretched from Mesopotamia to Egypt, criss-crossing the ancient land of the Bible. Meanwhile, ships transported goods from the Greek islands into ancient Canaan. Here, the locals highly prized wares from Cyprus, such as this Cypriot milk jug.

The Israelites, under the leadership of Moses, came from Egypt and wandered in the wilderness. Finally, they came into a land of large urban centers with expensive tastes. The Israelites’ own goods, especially their pottery, was very plain and poorly-made in comparison with the belongings that they plundered from the Canaanites as they conquered the land. But this was part of what God had promised them as he blessed the Israelites and punished the wickedness of the pagan Canaanites.

“So it shall be, when the Lord your God brings you into the land of which He swore to your fathers … to give you large and beautiful cities which you did not build, houses full of all good things, which you did not fill, hewn out wells which you did not dig, vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant…” – Deuteronomy 6:10–11

Details:

This Cypriot milk jug is of the style known as base ring ware. It is made of thin, hard clay with an orange slip coating its surface. It features applied decorative bands both in straight lines around the neck and in a wavy line around the body of the jug. The rim is pinched on one side for controlled pouring. A handle stretches from the shoulder of the vessel to the rim. The top of the handle features an incised decoration. This jug was made in Cyprus and imported into Canaan during the Late Bronze Age, around the time that the Israelites conquered the land.
