Early Roman Herodian Style Vinegar Jar

When the Romans took control of the Holy Land, they installed Herod the Great as a client king. He took orders from Rome, but his Jewish ancestry made him a suitable ruler for the Jewish people. Herod was famous for both his massive building projects and for his cruelty, such as his massacre of baby boys in Bethlehem as recorded in Matthew 2:16. When Herod died, Rome divided his kingdom between three of his sons, so the Herodian era continued for a second generation.

Pottery from the Herodian period, such as this Herodian style vinegar jar, is distinctive. This is the style of pottery that Jesus grew up using. Likely His mother, Mary, used this type of dishes in her kitchen. And, as Jesus hung on the cross at the end of his life on earth, someone offered him vinegar, which likely came from a small jar like this one.

“A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.” – John 19:29

This Herodian style vinegar jar features a rounded body with lightly ribbed sides. The neck is narrow with a widened rim. A delicate handle stretches from the rim to the shoulder of the vessel.
