Description

Iron Age I Oil Juglet

The climate in the Holy Land is ideal for growing olives, and olive groves cover the hillside. The ancient inhabitants of the land used olive oil for a variety of purposes. They used it for skin care, cooking, and lamp fuel. They mixed it with aromatic substances to create perfume, and with medicinal herbs to create medicines. Additionally, olive oil functioned in temple rituals and for anointing rulers. When Samuel anointed Saul as the first king of Israel, he warned the people,

“This will be the behavior of the king who will reign over you: …he will take the best of your fields, your vineyards, and your olive groves, and give them to his servants.” – 1 Samuel 8: 11, 14

Due to the popularity of olive oil, containers were necessary to store, transport, and pour it. This Iron Age I oil juglet would have been ideal for containing and pouring small quantities of oil, perhaps for kitchen use or for bathing. The user would have re-filled it as needed from a larger storage jar.

Details:

This juglet dates to the Iron Age I, the period of the Judges of Israel. It features a red slip, a coating of reddish clay which the potter poured over the vessel before firing it in a kiln. The body of the juglet is rounded with a small, flat base. Spiral marks are visible on the base of the juglet where the potter used a string to lift the juglet from the spinning potter’s wheel. The neck of the juglet flares slightly toward the top. A small handle stretches from the base of the neck to the shoulder of the vessel.
