Description
Ceramic Flask from the Iron Age I
The design of ancient ceramic flasks is unusual compared to other vessels from the time. An Iron Age clay flask was a traveler’s vessel. The flat, wide shape made it easy to carry against the body, while the two handles allowed the user to tie a rope to the flask and carry it from his shoulder or waist. Perhaps it was a flask similar to this that Samuel used to anoint Saul as the first king of Israel.
“Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on [Saul’s] head, and kissed him and said, ‘is it not because the Lord has anointed you commander over His inheritance?'” – 1 Samuel 10:1
This Iron Age clay flask is made of reddish clay. It features a round, flattened body and a narrow neck that flares slightly at the rim. Two handles connect the neck with the shoulder of the vessel.
